Local authorities in Birgunj latched an indefinite curfew, effective from 4 pm on Monday, following tense atmosphere resulting from demonstrations organized by the cadres of the United Democratic Madheshi Front.
Chief District Officer of Parsa district Keshav Raj Ghimire said that the curfew will remain intact until further notice.
Security in Birgunj remained tensed since morning with reports of protesters clashing with the security personnel at different parts of the city. Police fired some shots in the air and launched several shells of teargas shells to bring the volatile situation under control.
About dozen protesters were reportedly injured during clash with the police. Protesters vandalized several public vehicles while enforcing the strike.
The injured protesters are being treated at the Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital.
